side to side

Atrium Artspace is proud to present side to side, a solo exhibition of artworks by Backseat.  side to side is an exploration of the struggle to find balance between survival and fun; consistency and spontaneity.  The collection is the artist’s reflection on navigating this dichotomy, creating a visible bridge between reality and imagined by making the real approachable and the imagined immersible.

The canvases portray eerie scenes of mundane experiences with signature characters that move swiftly from scene to scene.  These familiar environments are contrasted with playful images and sculptures made with simple lines and bold colors that allow us to escape into a new world.

side to side is on view at Atrium Artspace - 2029 Maryland Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland from January 18, 2025 to February 15, 2025.

    Backseat

Evan Steck (Backseat) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Baltimore, Maryland. His multimedia artwork ranges from acrylic paintings to oil pastel drawings and sculptures. The artworks often depict stylized characters, oddly familiar environments, and scenes inviting the viewer’s participation. Evan explores a variety of themes through a surrealist lens - using color, shape, and form to enhance his observations of everyday experiences.

Originally from Prince George’s County, Maryland, Evan began his artistic journey at a young age by exploring different ways of creative expression through childhood museum visits in D.C., magazines, and books at home. His art-making took on a variety of forms over the years, venturing into photography and collage as he honed in on his self-taught techniques and style. In recent years, his artwork has been featured in solo exhibitions (Backseat, 2023, Washington D.C.) and group exhibitions (Seemed like a Good Idea at the Time, 2021, Baltimore).
